How to do church Part 16: doing communion the right way

The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.

  • These are the words used in the Church of England Communion Service.
  • These are the words used by Paul in chapter 11 of 1 Corinthians to remind the people how to ‘do’ Communion in a right and proper way.
  • These are the words of Jesus at his last supper here on earth as recorded in Matthew 26

SO…

…take this act of remembrance seriously every single time. Don’t go through the motions while you’re thinking about something else, it’s far too important for that.

…treasure this opportunity to remember what Jesus has done for you. It’s not an opportunity to chat to the person next to you.

…don’t push in front of anyone else.

…don’t take more than your fair share.

…don’t take part in this special act where there is division among you. Differences, yes, there are bound to be differences, but not division in your hearts. Come together in unity and love.

…don’t do it just because everyone else is doing it. If you’re not ready yet, wait until you are.

This message for us as church today was based on 1 Corinthians 11: 17-34
