We all die in the end

graveyardWe all die in the end.

Life is the same for everyone.

We all die in the end.

All are treated the same when it comes to death.

We all die in the end.

It makes no difference if you are good or wicked.

We all die in the end.

Everyone shares the same fate.

We all die in the end.

None of us can know what each day holds.

We all die in the end.

This is the worst thing about living on earth.

We all die in the end.

All our lifestyle choices are meaningless.

We all die in the end.

All our efforts to live a good life are meaningless.

We all die in the end.

The same destiny overtakes us all.

We all die in the end.

Life leads to death. That’s it.

We all die in the end.

we all dieThis isn’t just me on a downer. These words and thoughts are taken directly from Ecclesiastes 9:1-3. It’s the latest sheer drop in this roller coaster ride that is the Book of Ecclesiastes. Because the writer is right. What is the point of even trying to do life better, when ultimately we are all going to die anyway? I know some of you will be shouting ‘What about heaven? What about life after death?’, but we’re talking about an Old Testament writer who has no clear understanding of that. He’s talking about life as we know it on earth. And anyway, is the point of life on earth simply life after death? I’ve never quite got that myself.

We can choose to stay with that point and not move on any further. We can choose to believe that everyone meets the same fate, whatever they do, so we might as well do whatever we want and to hell with the consequences.

Or, with the writer of the Ecclesiastes, we can choose to take the next step.

Where there’s life, there’s hope.

When we are dead, there is nothing. Absolutely nothing.

hope 2Where there’s life, there’s hope.

It is better to be alive.

Where there’s life, there’s hope.

When we’re gone, we’re gone.

Where there’s life, there’s hope.

While we live, we have a share in what’s going on.

Where there’s life, there’s hope.

We can still join in with what’s happening under the sun.

Where there’s life, there’s hope.

This glimmer of hope is what will help us start the slow climb up from the bottom of the dip on the roller coaster. This glimmer of hope is what will help us get out of bed in the morning. This glimmer of hope is what will help us get through another day.

TO DO: How does the inevitability of death affect how you live your life? Only consider this for a couple of moments before taking a blank piece of paper and some pens and writing Where there’s life, there’s hope. Then have a good doodle for a good five minutes as you let those words sink into your soul.
